AP Research

AP Research is an advanced course in which students design, execute, and present an original research project on a topic of personal interest. Over the course of the year, students develop a research question, conduct a literature review, choose appropriate methodologies, analyze data, and synthesize findings into a scholarly paper. The course culminates in an academic presentation and oral defense. AP Research emphasizes critical thinking, academic writing, and independent inquiry.

My Research Project

My AP Research project explores how African American women in science fiction films are portrayed in leadership and STEM roles, and how these portrayals influence viewers’ perceptions of women of color in real-life STEM fields. I analyzed a selection of recent sci-fi films and viewer reviews to examine whether audiences notice these portrayals and how they respond to them. My paper investigates the intersection of race, gender, media representation, and social perception, with the goal of highlighting how media can shape awareness, attitudes, and potentially impact self-esteem among young women of color.
